A visit to Gilmore Girls

When Gilmore Girls first exploded onto my TV screen 16 years ago, it had me hooked since the pilot episode. The series’ rapid fire dialogue and pop-culture references were riveting, and something I’ve not seen before in other television series. And I have seen a hell lot of TV shows.

I love everything about the series (except for season 6 when Rory decides to become a total brat); the colorful characters with just the right amount of eccentricity, the witty exchanges between Lorelai and Rory and the choice of music used in the show- always melodic, thanks to singer-songwriter Sam Phillips.

Now that the series is going to make a comeback, I wonder how much of Stars Hollow will they recreate?  Will Luke’s Diner still be around? Is Lorelai still living in the same house? Will the Gazebo in the town center remain there? How much of Stars Hollow do you remember?

When I visited Los Angeles a decade ago, visiting the Gilmore Girls set was the first thing on my to-do list. To remember where we left off in Stars Hollow, here’s a trip back to Rory’s hometown and get re-acquainted with familiar sights.

Stars Hollow
The first sight of Stars Hollow- the town center. I got too excited when I saw the Gazebo. The show was in summer hiatus when I visited, which explains the bit of construction you see on the right. It was to set up for another show.

At the town center is the Stars Hollow High School, where Rory used to study in the first few episodes before she got enrolled in Chilton. Lane, of course, still went here.

This house was easy to remember because of the red door, it was Christopher’s (Rory’s dad) place.

Next stop- the Star Hollows Theatre!

Sadly, this is the only picture I have of Luke’s Diner. The front of the diner was completely torn apart to prep for another show, and this is what’s left of the diner’s interior, which was stripped bare as it gets prepped as another interior set. While many other Gilmore Girls sets are filmed for their exterior only, Luke’s Diner is one of the few that its interior was used as a set location instead of being filmed in a studio.

I was extremely excited to pass by this set- Miss Patty’s dance theater, and the location of the town meetings, because of its prominence in the show.

Do you remember? This is Stars Hollow’s first and only traffic light.

Lane’s home! Can you recognize it?

This is it! The Gilmore home! The house was used as an exterior set only, while the interior scenes was shot at a production studio.

Of course, next to the Gilmore residence is Babbette’s home, undergoing some refurbishments for another show.

Lorelai’s jeep. There were around 3 to 4 of such identical jeeps used for filming.

Rory’s car from her grandparents.

Back to town at Weston’s Bakery, the alternative to Luke’s diner, handy when Lorelai has a tiff with Luke.

The video store where the Gilmores’ often frequent because they’re such movie maniacs.

Well this is it!

Besides the outdoor sets, we also managed to get to tour some indoor sets. We made a visit to Yale, where I realized that the dining hall is also the library, and the classroom is also the news room. We also learnt that Sookie’s backdoor is used as Lorelai’s back door and almost everything was shot in the studios if possible… most of the scenes at Yale are shot in the studio, even some outdoor ones, the crew just used very strong lighting to simulate natural light.

It has been nine years since its hasty end, and I’ve never come across another TV series that matched the Gilmore Girls. I’m beyond the moon that Netflix is developing the Gilmore Girls comeback.

There’s really nothing else to say but Oy with the poodles already!
