Snapshot: The Mozartsteg

This is the Mozartsteg, an Art Nouveau Bridge in the heart of Salzburg city in Austria, above the Salzach River, closing the gap between the Imbergstraße/ Steingasse and Rodolfskai/ Mozartplatz Square.

Built in 1903, the erection of the bridge came about when a wealthy cafe owner along Imbergstraße lobbied for it, sprung from his desire to beat his competitors on the other side of the river. When it was first built, a toll was charged for usage. But in 1920, the Mozartsteg became a public bridge. The little toll house right beside the bridge is now home to a local jewellery and craft artist. At opposite ends of the bridge, you can catch panoramic views of the other side of the river.

In 1965, the bridge was featured in The Sound of Music, where Maria brought the Von Trapp family kids on a trip to town. Can you remember the scene?
