Top Beach destinations around the World

There’s just something calming about beach holidays; gazing at the horizon, hypnotized by sounds of waves lapping the shores, and the welcoming sea breeze caressing our faces. But with an abundance of beach destinations out there, how do you pick the right one?

Selecting the right beach really depends on the purpose of your visit. It may be a family getaway, a romantic rendezvous or a back-to-nature adventure. I did a lot of digging, a lot of reading, and a lot of ogling at gorgeous pictures and came up with a list of top ten beaches (unranked) around the world that I would gladly cavort.

North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii

One of the world’s best surfing destinations, Oahu, known as “The Gathering Place”, is a welcoming, refreshing escape from the city jungle. It’s at the legendary North Shore of this third largest island of the Hawaiian Islands that you find the biggest waves, especially during winter.

Clear, glistening waters during summer time makes the North Shore ideal for diving and snorkelling activities, or for just simply lazing under the sun. But if you dare to be different, winter is where the North Shore truly displays its grandeur. For diehard surfers, the Banzai Pipeline at the Ehukai Beach, fondly referred to as the Seven Mile Miracle, is notorious for its massive waves that race fast and furious towards the shore from all the way from Alaska. Waves at this surfing Mecca can climb as high as 25 feet.

Tip: Because of the size of its waves, top surfing competitions are held at the Banzai Pipeline. If you’re out to enjoy a surfing holiday, make sure to check the competition dates to avoid stumbling into one that may ruin your surfing experience.

If diving is more your thing, visit the Three Tables and Sharks Cove at the Pupukea Beach Park. Here, the waters are calming; thanks to the rock barrier that creates a natural enclosure. There’re still quite a number of marine creatures swimming around, making snorkelling a fun activity to engage in. Shark’s Cove offers hidden pools and rock structures which makes it seem as if you are exploring underwater caves, that eventually lead out to the open ocean.

Tip: When at the Pupukea Beach Park, watch out for rocks, which can be pretty slippery.

Over at the southwest end of Pupukea is Waimea Bay, another hotspot for conquering those monstrous waves on the North Shore. Together with Sunset Beach, where surfers can expect enormous waves and the Banzai Pipeline, surfing daredevils are spoilt of choice during the winter. If you have a thirst to catch that perfect wave, Oahu’s North Shore is the place to have your Point Break moment.

Bora Bora, Tahiti

Love is in the air in Bora Bora, Tahiti, a romantic mysterious island rich in legends, myths and natural beauty.

Two majestic peaks of black rock rise from the island’s heart, remnants of an extinct volcano, enveloped by cascading slopes of greenery that melts into a body of clear blue water at its foot. The water then fans out into an enchanting lagoon that completes the picturesque portrait.

And this lagoon is where you indulge in endless fun with water sports such as windsurfing, swimming, scuba-diving or jet-skiing. Bora Bora’s sparkling waters are ideal for snorkelling, because the clear water gives you an untainted view of the vibrant fish and corals that live here. Scuba diving is also another popular activity; you can follow the trail of magnificent and colourful marine creatures all the way out to the open sea.

For an evening of romantic splendour, set off on a cruise of the Bora Bora Lagoon, where you can soak in the peace and tranquillity of the scenic views around you. Then catch the warm, amber hues of the setting sun change colour before disappearing into the horizon while sipping on Tahitian cocktails. A guide is on hand to share in-depth stories of the island and its rich history.  For the romantic trip of a lifetime, you can’t go wrong with Bora Bora.

Tip: to capture all the Kodak moments during your cruise, a professional photographer can be engaged to immortalise all the unforgettable moments.

Mykonos, Greece

Hidden deep inside mystical Greece is the island of Mykonos; a stunning all-white town that rises from habour to hilltop. From afar, the reflection of the sparkling Aegan waters bouncing off the stark white town walls creates an illuminative light, casting a magical spell on the island.

Most of Mykonos’ beaches lie on its south, like Paradise, Super Paradise, Platis Yialos, Ornos and Psarou. You can do anything from windsurfing to diving here. If you’re not a fan of water sports and just wish to chill out, there are plenty of beachside taverns. Mykonos is well known for its beach parties. Word is that Paradise beach and Super Paradise beach have the best beach parties in town.

In contrast, the beaches on the northern coast are ideal for a more tranquil holiday. The Panormos and Agios Sostis beaches are generally quieter and isolated, lending an untainted view of endless stretches of golden sand that blends with the crystalline waters. You can’t find deck chairs or huge umbrellas anywhere here.  The Panormos beach is easily reached by a private car, or even a motorbike. The Agios Sostis beach, on the other hand, is a lot harder to access; visitors would need to traverse a treacherous rocky path to get there. But when you do get there, you’ll be treated to a spectacular view of about 250 m of untouched sand. Some nudists have been known to favour this beach due to its secluded location.

Tip: If you’re not into nude sunbathing, then avoid walking to the far end of the beach, where nudists are known to visit.

The nightlife in Mykonos ranks amongst the best in the world. Bars are littered everywhere, catered to every preference. From cosy bars like La Notte where you can soak in the Greek Culture with its local music, to established clubs like Remezzo and Caprice, you’ll be spoilt for choice. If you’re a party animal with an interest in culture, Mykonos has all that and more.

The powdery sand on Palm Beach is where the best sand castles are made from, making it an excellent place for kids’ imagination to run wild. While the munchkins conjure up their works of art from the fine white baby powder sand, the adults can chill out beneath the tropical sky in the good company of the calming, turquoise sea.

Tip: if you’re looking to get a hut on the beach to chill under, always reserve it the day before, in case it runs out.

At the Kibaima Miniature Village and Park, the children get to experience and explore Aruban-style buildings and housing, and also learn more about the native animals and plants.
